John Kruse, British Fairies: I take the title of this posting from one of the Anglo-Saxon herbals or Leechbooks. Our forebears diagnosed a number of ailments which they ascribed to malign fairy intervention; one of these was called ælfadl (which we may roughly translate as elf- addle today).
