Chamath Palihapitiya, who worked as vice president of user growth, said he was riven with ‘guilt’ for his role in helping Facebook to attract two billion users. He is one of several dissenting voices who has spoken out against the all-pervasive social network recently.

In November Sean Parker, whose early stake in Facebook turned him into a billionaire, said the site exploited ‘a vulnerability in human psychology’. Then an early Facebook investor called Roger McNamee compared the social network to Nazi propaganda and said it uses the same methods to those employed by propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels.

Palihapitiya was taking part in an event at the Stanford Graduate School of Business last month when he issued an astonishing broadside against his former employer.

William Binney is a former high ranking intelligence official with the National Security Agency (NSA). He is one of the highest placed intelligence officials to ever blow the whistle on insider NSA ‘knowings.’

He made headlines when he resigned in 2001 after 9/11, having worked more than thirty years for the agency. He was a leading code-breaker against the Soviet Union during the Cold war, and was repelled by the United States’ massive surveillance programs.

He’s had quite the go, starting in 2002 when he let the public know of a system ( ‘trailblazer’) intended to analyze data carried on communication networks (like the internet). He exposed the agencies eavesdropping program and has faced harassment from the FBI, NSA and more. He has been in and out of the court room ever since he decided to resign and blow the whistle.

Encryption is the only way to protect private communications. So it’s not all that surprising that so far – hundreds of thousands of “Smart” Meters have been recalled and/or replaced throughout North America due to various reasons including fires, explosions, general failure, and measurement errors.  There are utility companies who are already making plans to replace hundreds of thousands more.

All over the world, concerned citizens, elected officials, and organizations have been fighting to keep “Smart” Meters out of their communities due to health, safety, privacy, and cybersecurity concerns.  When they haven’t been able to completely stop utilities, they fight for the right to “opt out” of “Smart Meters” being installed on their homes and businesses.

As a kid my utmost hero was Robin Hood. It was on the tele on Saturdays and I watched every episode. We even had a Robin Hood gang with bows and arrows and a secret hideout, and everything. I remember being inconsolable when I reached the end of the book, I had been given as a present. The elderly Robin lay dying, yet summoned the strength to fire his last arrow into the forest. Where it landed he was to be buried.

Around the same time another inspirational series of a similar anti-tyrant hero appeared on our black and white screens, William Tell.  Where Robin’s arch enemy was the Sherriff of Nottingham (whose morally bankrupt and grasping ways are still at large in the Nottingham governance, by the way), William Tell rose up for his people against the tyrant, Landburgher Gessler.

Such heroes of children, girls and boys, instilled courage, morality and a sense of legitimate justice; and they taught children to look after each other, that in numbers they could triumph against the powers of darkness. It is a sad fact that this generation who did rally against oppression, and corporate and State psychopathy and criminality have been successfully supplanted and replaced by increasingly de-spirited into dispirited generations that have fallen for marketers’ baubles and State misdirection, threats and intimidation.

They don’t make TV and films of Robin Hood and William Tell that unambiguously carry those inspirational messages anymore, of course. In fact, I doubt that many have even heard of William Tell, and indeed nothing very modern has been filmed of his story. It could be because of where it’s set (in the bankers’ fiefdom of Switzerland) and sensitivities to Gessler being a Jewish name. A recent Hollywood almost-a go-er was dropped with all kinds of excuses.

Every culture has similar heroes and heroines, I’m sure. They are there in our folklore for a very good reason.

Today, the word ‘Aryan’ is loaded with all sorts of negative connotation, largely due to Nazi ideology, Aryans have become associated with racial hierarchies that consider white, blonde, blue-eyed peoples superior. This served as a very useful propaganda tool for couching racist sentiments in seeming historic realities. However, it is not factual.

Only in the late 19th early 20th centuries did Aryan become equated with Germanic or Nordic peoples. Prior to this corruption, Aryan referred to an archaic language whose speakers are thought to have spread and influenced languages throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Most people are now familiar with the traditional “Out of Africa” model: modern humans evolved in Africa and then dispersed across Asia and reached Australia in a single wave about 60,000 years ago. However, technological advances in DNA analysis and other fossil identification techniques, as well as an emphasis on multidisciplinary research, are revising this story. Recent discoveries show that humans left Africa multiple times prior to 60,000 years ago, and that they interbred with other hominins in many locations across Eurasia.

A review of recent research on dispersals by early modern humans from Africa to Asia by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa confirms that the traditional view of a single dispersal of anatomically modern humans out of Africa around 60,000 years ago can no longer be seen as the full story.

The idea to reduce, re-use, and recycle is not a modern phenomenon. Over the last few years, there have been several instances in which scientists and historians have found ancient texts being written over by later generations. One interesting example came to light through analysis of a medieval document with multispectral imaging. Scientists using this technology were able recover text hidden below the words from the Middle Ages. What they found provides new insight on philosophical education in late antiquity.

The more recent writing in the text is the Prophetic Books of the Greek Old Testament from the 13th century. However, there are words below that – writing by the ancient Greek writer Euripides surrounded by ancient annotations, and a commentary on Aristotle by an unknown author which dates back to the 5th century.

“Never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race (…). The heathens poured out the blood of saints around the altar, and trampled on the bodies of saints in the temple of God, like dung in the streets”.

With these words, Alcuin of York, a Northumbrian scholar serving King Charlemagne of the Franks and Lombards described the surprising and brutal attack in June 793 on the church of St Cuthbert on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

The brutal Viking raid sent a shockwave through England and the rest of Christian Europe.

The 8th of June is according to the Annals of Lindisfarne the exact date when Vikings raided the Holy Island. Consequently, the Viking Age is defined to have started on this date, maybe at sunrise so that the raiders could sneak into the Northumbrian island under cover of dusk.

But is this really the exact date when Vikings became Vikings? Of course not, but the date marks a deep sword stab into the midst of the heart of the Christian Anglo-Saxon England.
