Ben Emlyn-Jones reports on the October Probe International conference:

A new analysis suggests that an older Neanderthal from nearly 50,000 years ago, ended up being deaf and most likely depended on his friends in order to survive, after he had suffered several injuries and other deterioration.

A team of archaeologists in Egypt has recently uncovered an ancient Coptic tombstone during the excavation works taking place in the Avenue of Sphinxes. Now archaeologists suggest that the tomb belongs to a 10-year-old girl.

…..Mostafa Waziri said in a statement that the inscription of one of the engraved words on the tombstone states the word “Jesus”.

As Autumn thins the leaves of the oak trees and hazel coppices of Yellowham Woods, the ancient woodland adjacent to Puddletown Forest, just outside of Dorchester, this could very well be the best time of year to spot what purports to be Dorset’s answer to Bigfoot!

The simian-like creature of American folklore, otherwise known as Sasquatch, has long been a staple of the ‘Wild Men’ stories found among the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Said to inhabit the forests of that region, with sightings spread throughout North America however, Bigfoot is now something of a phenomenon in popular culture, yet he may have a British cousin…

On 16 October, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation aired an interview with Hillary Clinton: one of many to promote her score-settling book about why she was not elected President of the United States.

Wading through the Clinton book, What Happened, is an unpleasant experience, like a stomach upset. Smears and tears. Threats and enemies. “They” (voters) were brainwashed and herded against her by the odious Donald Trump in cahoots with sinister Slavs sent from the great darkness known as Russia, assisted by an Australian “nihilist”, Julian Assange.

In The New York Times, there was a striking photograph of a female reporter consoling Clinton, having just interviewed her. The lost leader was, above all, “absolutely a feminist”. The thousands of women’s lives this “feminist” destroyed while in government – Libya, Syria, Honduras – were of no interest.

One of the greatest mysteries is the origin of the human mind. Why are humans so different from other animals? Why do we have languages, religions, complex political and economic systems, and advanced technologies such as airplanes and rockets, while other species for the most part don’t have any of these things? Evolutionary biologists and paleoanthropologists are busy finding the answer to this question. One very interesting recent finding is the role that self-domestication may have played in the evolution of human cognition and particularly the evolution of human language. Scientists studying other species have noticed that anatomically modern humans differ from earlier pre-modern hominins in ways like domesticated animals differ from their wild ancestors.

When one of us began studying psychology he was told that if the aim was to understand human relationships, it would be better served by studying literature—especially Shakespeare. Since then, at least as concerns clinical psychology, the subject has moved on to become an evidence-based humanistic alternative to psychiatry’s rather mindless medical model. Yet some of Shakespeare’s insights do still remain unrecognized. Despite all the innumerable treatises on Shakespeare, there is a near absence of any discussion of what can be inferred from his works concerning his view on the paranormal.

  1. Oh Ellis thank you soooo much for A drop of the Hard stuff!!! Made my day. My dad loved Peter Sellers and the Goons and I have the original LP with this on. I’m in pleats. A good laugh is what we all need. ‘Mind me harp, mind me harp. Oh I’ll never get to heaven now’. Classic x

    • No worries digilly1, glad you enjoy it. Your Dad had excellent taste and obviously a very good sense of humour. The Goons were a riot; Peter Sellers on his own too, they were all funny as heck. The song is a favourite of mine since I was a kid too. One of my Irish friends from my youth, Sean, and I, were bantering about it all over again just the other day, which is what reminded me to post it. From memory it was a B-side on a single my parents had but I can’t remember what the A-side was. Thanks.
