The First Disappointments?

Ladies and gentlemen of the police services. Please ask yourselves every day: "Am I fullfilling my pledge?"... "Am I protecting and serving?"
And if the answer is 'yes'; then ask yourself "Who?" "Who are you serving?"...and "What are you serving?" Is it a what that you are protecting, or a who?
(Do you feel permitted to do this?)
Do you lead with your heart or do you lead with your boot? A boot on a string.

One day you will have to account for your actions. But before that you do that properly you will have to account to your grandkids. You are in the front line...but whose front line? Humanity's? Surely, that can be the only answer, can't it?

"Once upon a time...actually, not very long ago...in a land...right here, children were free to play unhindered; to climb trees, swim in the river, fish...they had carefree days...and all people, even grown-ups, could expect those. They could enjoy private and quiet moments without being seen as strange; travel anywhere without a camera in their face, nor in their ear from a chattering imbecile irradiating what they never use anymore, if they ever did. Water was clean and free and humans got together to demand these freedoms and human rights, and they achieved them. People lived in communities, they were families and they looked after their own. They scolded their own too and everybody learnt the value of respect. Everybody, unless you were French, was innocent unless they were proven to be guilty by a jury of their peers.

Even in Australia people could walk out of a shop without people pouncing on them to search their belongings - just because they were entranced into their re-tail centre. (Only reptiles can grow another tail can't they?) Shops in Australia are Gingerbread Houses. (This is true ladies and gentlemen; and Australians put up with it!) *
Freedom guys must surely begin somewhere east of here (that's a metaphor if you are a literal kind of a gal or guy, Bruce or Sheila).
'K Mart sucks' - remember that? A classic line from the Rainman, and so true, but they all do and though K Mart does deserve it so do the rest of them. They all suck. Flogging acres of hookey gear from squalid sweatshops that rob the dignity from human being at prices that would keep the person who slaves over them, and their families, for months. Every item is tagged anyway, and cameras (where are they made?) leer at their (ac)customers all of the time; from the moment they step outside their home really. The majority of Australians worship cameras and security...and mammon, now. Big Brother's proving ground. Scratch the melanoma and it isn't anything like the brochures. Nothing like the fair go, and mateship that built the country and produced heroes.

I can't see why anyone would bother protesting any other issue if they are content to give away this most fundamental moral right to personal sovereignty. One day, just one day, of nobody buzzing into their fly-traps will soon stop this nazi's wet-dream...

The times I've stood there and told some witless dupe that they are not going to look in my bags! or I just carry on walking through... Some warders just wave you on, most do, only one hasn't and she was someone in a supermarket in sleepy Agnes Water in Queensland for god's sake! She banned me from the shop when I refused to allow their sticky beaks into my private space - but only after I'd told her that she could shove her shop and to wake up to herself. Some people just can't seem to come to, that is very sad.

This is just one example of the relentless creeping darkness that slips us effortlessly towards our darkest hours; and it succeeds because people don't do or say anything and stand up to this unacceptable behaviour from these control freaks. Is everyone in Australia really a criminal who only goes into a shop to steal from it? Maybe they are. They seem to think so; or they'd not put up with this treatment. But they do. I'll tell you what though,'the Diggers' didn't lay down their lives battling against tyranny just so that their children would give in to it...and neither would your descendants have, no matter where you came from.

Just think what extraordinary people your forebears must have been just for you to be here. Don't let them down. They did not let us down; but we are well on the road to being the first disappoinments.

* I do have some footage of shop staff ambushing their customers but due to consideration for people's privacy I won't post it here. You can have a squizz at a few signs and stills though. These are almost invariably placed where distracted shoppers will not notice them so that it doesn't put anyone who is awake off going in. Australia today, tomorrow the world - if it isn't with you already. It's been going on here for at least 22 years that I know of.
